The sun shone just until before our departure, then it poured down, filling the canvas roof "walls" with water as they were lowered. I strategically placed towels to catch the water as it seeped out of the window zips while traveling
Still traveling on really interesting roads. Great scenery
Several
more check points with different ways of slowing oncoming
traffic. Often just an “S” bend with concrete blocks but one had electric rises in the middle of the road. I managed to snap them just
before they disappeared. Most of the guys are friendly.
The
landscape changed again with these rock formations.
We
had been doing it slow but at Askale we turned North onto one of the
mountain passes listed in the dangerous roads website.
It
started as a 4 lane highway and dropped to two the only scary thing
about the road was the arrows placed on it going the WRONG” way. We
did drive cautiously till the next oncoming car confirmed to ignore
the arrows.
The
pass was at 2400m the highest we have been in Turkey. Sealed all the
way with snow about - but nothing even interesting with the road. A
tunnel is being built to cut the top 6km off the pass so it can
remain open all year. But although it was supposed to finish in 2015
it is not even half complete.
The
good thing is with the last section of road we have made some miles.
Turning
East again onto a windy slow road. We stopped at a small village and
ate a great lunch in a small modern cafe where the buses stop.
Another AU$10 meal.
A
small effort required for a camp. There was no room at the dam wall so
headed back into the hills up a bulldozed track but backed down from
that and camped on the side of a small road overlooking the bridge
and dam. A couple of cars went passed during the evening.
