Left camp around 7:30am for the drive down the Pantanal. 140km’s, 118
bridges. Amazing amount of
birds and wildlife.
Met some frenchies in a combi van who had traveled down a few bridges and camped. They had trouble with the mozzies so tented it. They needed fuel so didn't’ travel down far. We traded key rings; an Eiffel tower for a kangaroo!
Just some of the animals we saw, parrot's and nests, capybara, otters, marsh deer, greater rhea, jabiru, owl, water fowl, hundreds of small birds, king-fishers, great egets, cocoi herons, rufescent tiger heron, striated heron, many types of vultures and hawks, toco toucan and macaws. Some of these birds we had seen previously up on the Amazon rivers.
Oh and did I mention caiman (alligator), caiman and more caiman I am sure you could walk across the ponds on their backs (est. 30million).
Iguana's sunning themselves; little green lizards dashing across the road and 3 snakes slithered quickly off the road. One was beautiful, about 1.5m long with the later half of his body a brilliant green, one a python of about 3m length the other about 2m long.
Otters and monkeys.
An amazing amount of wildlife to be seen here, and we did not get to see the jaguar, puma, tapir, giant anteater and the myriad of other animals.
Some of the bridges were a little old, some were bypassed. One in particular John got out to examine, all good. Not until later when we saw the road works and realized that the dump trucks with dirt crossed the bridges. The dump trucks were certainly not over full!
Had lunch at the end
of the road by the river and then headed back up the track and camped
on the edge of the road close to a bridge so we could see and hear
all the alligators and wildlife.
