Our last camp in Romania was very windy with sleet and
sago on and off during the night. About 00:30 we dropped the roof
fully on account of the noise and buffeting but by morning we were
buffeted as much without the top up.
The drive out to the main road
was easy but the rest of the day the roads became more slippery.
About 10am we pulled up at the border, the only car in sight. The official
took our passports asked where we were going, took our passports
inside and returned with them stamped 5 mins later. We just needed to stop in 400m to pay for the road toll.
Road
toll paid and on our way into Bulgaria. I just got one step ahead as
John has previously been to Bulgaria, but it was my first time. What jumped out to us immediately was that the trees still had leaves on.
Deciding on a spot for lunch. We turned off the main road, got some cash in a
small town of Karvana and then headed to cape Kaliakra. Toasted
sandwiches for lunch. The day still full of wind and sago.
Decided
to walk to the fort which was well worth it perched as it was on the
cliffs. However the walk back to the vehicle in the wind was pretty
chilly. About -2℃, high winds and stinging sago.
The coast was beautiful seen from above. The first little bit of coastal altitude we have had for a while now.
The
roads had become worse while we were lunching and we traveled at
about 40km/h in 4WD. With the slower drive we ere not going to get past
the town of Varna where we intended to turn west.
So we heeded
onto a truck by-pass and found a nice spot in some trees close to the
road - without the wind. Snow falling now. Forecast is for -3℃, a real-feel
of -10℃ & 1-2 cm of snow.
