As we
climbed the snow became thicker and the lakes were solid.
We saw our
first ice fishing!!
At
Dospat Reservoir, whee we were heading for last night, the surface
was solid with more ice fisherman. There was no way down to the lake
so we had made a great call last night. And because of the windy road
we would not have made it before dark.
We
stopped and filled at a public water system. Very cold water.
Fish Ponds
On
Elena’s suggestion we drove the 7 km to the Devil’s throat.
The road up was pretty neat with overhangs and tunnels
We
paid the small entrance fee then entered the cave. We walked down to
a huge cavern. The river running through the bottom. Up and out the
other side with 250 steps. The tale is that whatever goes in at the
top doesn’t come out the bottom. Die was used and it took over 2
hours to go the 300m. Two of the countries best cave divers went in
never to be seen again…..
looking down the steps
looking down into the river in the large cavern
Certainly
well worth the detour.
The
police asked to see our papers when we got back to the main road. The
upper part of this road is within 5 km of Greek border.
A very narrow road led to the car-park from the last village. It was
late so we set up camp and headed up the track to the fortress. Not
much left but neat views.
