The
barges, 4-6 of them lashed together, with tug are quite amazing to feel/hear and then
see them. Their thrumming engines seems to enter ones body at the
core then the ears. A strange mix of feel and hear. I am not sure how
they control the front of the barge so far in front. They make their
way slowly up river, the Danube runs at a fair old pace. At a guess
4-5 knots.
It
had drizzled overnight but the track was already wet and muddy.
Getting out was no problems.
We drove along the road parallel to the
Danube. First we had to get to it. We went inland away from the
Danube on a small farmers track, then atop a levy bank.
The track
slow and rough but not muddy. In places they had been burning the
rushes out of the drain but here they are in all their beauty.
We are certainly in another country the feel here is quiet different. Lots more horse and carts, last time we saw this many was in Eastern Turkey.
We travelled through small
villages, which had a very different feel to Bulgaria. The general
feel is that they are more financial here. Their houses are better
kept, of more interesting designs with lots of vegie gardens now
being prepared and planted for spring.
A public well
Spring is in the air and the flowers are for sale on every street corner.
A Romanian lunch baked mushies with cheese and a local stew with polenta
Grave yards are well occupied.
The base of a stork nest
At
the base of the hill at the edge of the flood plain we found the
local rubbish dumping spot, obviously entering town from the
back...again.
John caught these two dogs posing on the cars roof top.
A very common way to travel
A "bus" drawn by a tractor....
Some
trees, willow amongst them, are just starting to green and buds are
about to burst Spring is here. The crow or similar birds are flocking
back to their nests in the bare trees.
We have only seen the one stork.
The
road in general was slow and the 50 limit through the towns eats into travelling time. We did not get the distance we hoped for. Camps
were a little hard to find and the sun was getting very low. John
found a positive spot on the map so travelled a little later than
usual and camp again by the Danube just after sunset, about 18:30.
