2018-01-20 Day 261 Sat

We left early and had a wonderful foggy drive up through the mountains. There is still some quite big timber standing.

A new building for the customs and immigration in a stunning setting. Checking out of Chile was done very quickly and friendly. The Pass is open December to March and the  guys do a whole season here. Another couple of km to the actual border then another 6.5km to the Argentine facilities. These were not quite as grand as the Chilean counterpart just a couple of containers. These guys do a month rotation here. All good another 3 months. We were now in the Lanin National park. We did a short walk to a cascade and a lake. Drove a little further and found a track down to the lake. Launched the canoe and had a couple of hours paddle. We explored the lava flow from the water. Some little secret “harbours” that we could just fit through the entrance of. A great paddle with john doing more than his fair share of the paddling.

We continued out of the park, very definite camping places here. The last bridge we crossed had a 2 tonne limit sign which we ignored. Lots of people out and about as well here so we decided to head inland to lakes where our map did not indicated much in the way of towns and certainly no cabanas. Once again took us ages to find a camp. The road had been slowly degrading until it did not look terribly well used but cars still passing us going the other way. Some not very happy looking. This road has been very rough and uninteresting. We found one camp and realized we could not finish drying the kayak (because of thorns every where) so left. Finally found one in the pines in a very dusty spot. Put the kayck across the front seats hanging out the windows. Just tucked the ends in when locking up for the nights. A tiny shower of rain in the night.
